SPIC Shanxi was designed with 3 mtpy alumina capacity comprising 500 ktpy capacity across six production lines. The company is set to suspend two 500 ktpy LT alumina production lines this week amid a bleak market.
The company has four LT production lines using imported bauxite and two HT production lines using local bauxite. It used 400 kt of imported bauxite for alumina refining in April and its May consumption of imported bauxite is expected to drop by 50% to 200 kt. The company currently holds imported bauxite capable of sustaining two months’ production. The two HT lines (500 kt each) typically consume 200 kt of local bauxite per month.
The company uses up to 6 mln t of imported bauxite per annum. It consumed 2 mln t of imported bauxite in 2019 and has used 1 mln t in the year to date. It chiefly sources bauxite from Guinea and Indonesia.
At present, mainstream prices of Indonesian bauxite at Al2O3 49% min, SiO2 3.5% max grade stand at USD49~50/t CIF China.
