Domestic alumina refineries using imported bauxite are grappling with problems of processing high viscosity bauxite from Guinea and the Solomon Islands. During 2019, SPIC Shanxi alumina refinery has been actively pushing forward with conversion to a low-temperature digestion process (LP) on two of its alumina production lines. Once the LP conversion is completed, the two lines will be 100% reliant on imported bauxite. The conversion includes a number of technological changes, such as to adding a spent liquor wash-out process, installation of vibrators on the tank and enlarging the feed port. These arrangements have proven to be effective in resolving the problems involved with high viscosity imported bauxite. This is viewed as creating positive outlook for the company’s full conversion to LP in mid-May, laying a solid foundation for achieving the company’s annual output target for 2019.
