SPIC Shanxi, with designed alumina capacity of 3 mtpy across six lines, produced 2.7 mln t of alumina in 2019, up 180 kt y-o-y. SPIC produced 820 kt of bauxite from its captive mines for use in alumina refining during 2019, a surge of 82.2% y-o-y. Meanwhile, with mining licenses in place and further environmental development at its Wutai and Ningwu bauxite mines, supply from its captive mines is expected to increase in 2020.
SPIC Shanxi started to use imported bauxite in May 2019, two production lines (precipitation process) were reliant on imported bauxite in May, a figure which increased to four by September, making SPIC the first alumina refinery in Shanxi to achieve economic use of imported bauxite on the large scale.
