China produced 5.65 mln t of alumina in April 2020, of which 5.395 mln t was SGA, with daily average output of 179.8 kt, up 2.61% m-o-m but down 7.07% y-o-y. China’s alumina output (SGA) reached 21.56 mln t in the first four months of 2020, down 8.61% y-o-y. Domestic alumina prices rebounded from the low point in April. The amount of alumina capacity cut declined as the impact of COVID-19 pandemic eased in China during April. However, some production lines using imported bauxite experienced production cuts, including SPIC Shanxi, Luoyang Wanji and Chongqing Bosai.
As of last week, domestic alumina capacity (SGA) reached 65.08 mtpy. SMM forecast domestic alumina (SGA) output at 5.53 mln t in May, with daily average output falling to 178 kt as some northern alumina refineries (Chalco Shanxi) are likely to make further cuts to operation of LT productions lines.
