The Ministry of Ecology and Environment criticized provincial officials in Shandong for failing to comply with policies aimed to reduce coal consumption and curb aluminium production growth.
The MEE claimed that Shandong faces a severe problem of rapid new capacity growth in industries that are already in excess, such as steel making and primary aluminium smelting. Recent results of the central government inspection on Shandong revealed that some local authorities have been lax about management and have been too “flexible” when implementing the policy of ‘strictly forbidden new capacity growth in industries with serious overcapacity problems such as primary aluminum and steel industries’- which was stipulated by the State Council.
