Henan Huiyuan Aluminium, designed with 800 ktpy alumina capacity, has two 400 ktpy production lines. The company has been running only one production line since the beginning of 2019, but the final operational line was suspended in July due to severe losses – resulting in a complete shutdown.
According to an inside source, the company’s red-mud dam is full, and it has no plan to resume operations until a new dam is built. The construction of a new red-mud dam began in late August 2019 and is scheduled to take eight months until completion in April 2020.
Henan Huiyuan produced 520 kt of alumina in 2018 with its 2019 output target at 200 kt.
At present, mainstream alumina prices are standing at RMB 2,510~2,560/t ex-works in Henan, an increase of RMB 20/t on last Friday.
