Guizhou Qiya, designed with 1.15 mtpy alumina capacity has stopped using imported bauxite amid a weak market.
According to an internal source, current spot alumina prices sitting under RMB2,100/t, sees the company in loss. The company’s two HT lines reliant on domestic bauxite are operational, but the LT line using imported bauxite has been suspended. Guizhou Qiya is capable of consuming 900 ktpy of imported bauxite per annum (mainly sourced from Indonesia and Malaysia), and its March 2020 consumption was 30 kt. It currently holds 30 kt in stock.
The company began using imported bauxite in June 2019, with 2019 annual consumption of 210 kt and Q1 2020 consumption of 110 kt.
At present, mainstream prices of Indonesian bauxite of Al2O3 47% min, SiO2 5% max grade stand at USD44.5~45.5/t CIF China, a decline of USD 0.5/t from last week.
