China Customs: China’s August bauxite imports dropped slightly by 6% on-month to 9.04 mln t, but still showed an increase of 14% on-year. Accumulated bauxite imports during the first eight months of 2019 totaled 75.06 mln t, a sharp increase of 30% from the same period last year.
Guinea remained China’s largest bauxite supplier in August with 3.64 mln t of exports, despite a significantly decline of nearly 20% on-month from July. This figure was followed by Australia, 3.63 mln t, up 8% on-month and Indonesia, 1.13 mln t, down 14% on-month.
No Malaysian bauxite was exported to China during August, but bauxite exports from Malaysia are expected to rise as the Malaysian government has announced a short-term resumption and expansion of bauxite exports. Malaysia exported 3.5 mln t of bauxite to China in December 2015, one month prior to its ban on bauxite mining started in January 2016.
