China produced 85.8 kt of magnesium in May 2022, up by 1.95% m-o-m and 29.12% y-o-y. China’s total magnesium production during the first five months of 2022 reached 422.4 kt, up by 26.36% y-o-y.
Magnesium smelters in IM and Xinjiang increased operations in May after environmental inspections. In the wake of declining magnesium prices and hot summer weather, smelters in major producing regions such as Shaanxi and Shanxi intend to run maintenance in June. Industry commentators forecast domestic magnesium production to drop slightly to 82 kt in June 2022.
