The Yunnan Development and Reform Commission recently approved mining projects at the Waitoushan bauxite mine in Wenshan and Tiechang bauxite mine in Malipo (Wenshan Aluminium). Both bauxite mines are new open-pit projects with service lives of seven years. The approval has further consolidated the bauxite supply source for Wenshan Aluminum (a subordinate of Yunnan Aluminium).
Yunnan Aluminium previously mined bauxite from its captive mines ( Maijiuping in Shanxichou and Hongsheke in Yanshan) for its alumina refining needs in Phase I 800 ktpy and Phase II 600 ktpy. Bauxite output from the two mines is in decline as a result of resource depletion after eight years of mining.
