China imported 4.34 mln t of nickel laterite in August 2022, down by 1.52% m-o-m and down by 24.92% y-o-y. The decline can be attributed to production cuts by domestic China NPI smelters led by falling NPI prices in the recent three months.
China imported 655 kt of NPI in August, up by 60% m-o-m and up by 80% y-o-y, led by surging exports from Indonesia during the month. Indonesia exported 582.8 kt of NPI to China in August, up by nearly 70% m-o-m. An increasing number of NPI production lines have come online and have been generating production in H2 2022 as the COVID pandemic situation has improved in Indonesia.
