GEM (Wuhan) Urban Mines and Urban Mineral Recycling Industrial Park is busy preparing for the upcoming peak of battery recycling.
Industry research revealed that due to a lack of supportive policies and little market incentive, a large amount of scrapped batteries end up in small recycling workshops – meaning a grey industrial chain with improper treatment and recycling processes. The battery recycling business is at a very early stage in China. An industry expert projects 480 kt of batteries will be scrapped in 2021 but only 200 kt will be recycled properly, accounting for less than 50% of the total.
