According to the ‘Implementation Plan for High-quality Development of Traditional Industries in IM’, new or upgraded primary aluminium projects must be installed with large electrolytic cells of 500 kA or above, while smaller cells less than 300 kA will be gradually phased out. An additional 3 mtpy of primary aluminium projects and associated projects including profiles, aluminum plates (strips, foils), as well as aluminium alloy projects will be developed in Baotou, Ordos and Tongliao, with a focus on comprehensive usage of aluminium-rich fly ash in the Jungar region and via the capacity replacement scheme. By 2022, IM’s primary aluminium capacity will be controlled at about 10 mtpy and downstream aluminum processing capacity will reach 7 mtpy.
