China’s primary aluminium capacity is expected to grow by 2.14 mtpy in 2019, involving 150 ktpy of restarted capacity and 1.99 mtpy new startups. IM will contribute significant growth with 720 ktpy of new capacity scheduled to come online during 2019. Furthermore, one Sichuan smelter and one Yunnan smelter with total designed capacity of 700 ktpy are scheduled to come online by end-2019.
China produced 2.97 mln t of primary aluminium in October slightly up from 2.95 mln t in September. China’s total primary aluminium output during the first ten months of 2019 amounted to 29.76 mln t, down 0.87% y-o-y.
China produced 36.05 mln t of primary aluminium in 2018. China currently has 47 mtpy completed primary aluminium capacity with total annual output expected at 35.7 mln t for 2019.
