Guangxi Beihai Chengde and Carrascal Nickel Corporation of the Philippines (CNC) signed an agreement for nickel laterite procurement in 2020. By this move Beihai Chengde has been able to secure stable supply from the Philippines.
Beihai Chengde, a stainless steel producer with 3 mtpy capacity, chiefly produces 200 series and 300 series stainless steel. Since the Indonesian government announced a ban on nickel laterite exports from 30th August, 2019, SMM forecast a NPI supply shortage of 50 kt (in Ni metal) for 2020.
