Thanks to new bauxite projects gradually coming online in Guinea, India and other regions across the world, global bauxite capacity is expected to increase by 23.82 mtpy in total, indicating ample supply for 2019.
In China, domestic capacities of both alumina and primary aluminium are unlikely to grow significantly given current policy constrains. Aluminium smelters have little incentive to increase either investment or output amid current losses and a grim outlook for aluminium prices. Consequently, industry commentators believe the pricing power of primary aluminium will tilt to the demand side during 2019.
