Over the past decade, global primary magnesium production has become increasingly concentrated in China, where supply is dominated by producers utilising the pyro-metallurgical Pidgeon Process. While this route has historically been competitive due to access to low-cost labour, energy and established supply chains, the process remains both energy- and labour-intensive. As China’s production costs continue to evolve and environmental standards tighten, the economics of magnesium production are gradually shifting.

At the same time, magnesium has gained prominence as a strategic and critical material, with governments and industry increasingly focused on supply chain resilience. China currently accounts for the vast majority of global primary magnesium supply, prompting renewed interest in developing production capacity outside China. Emerging projects in regions such as North America, Europe, Australia and the Middle East are seeking to establish alternative supply sources, often incorporating new technologies, lower-carbon processes and integrated downstream value chains.

Demand dynamics are also evolving. China remains the largest consumer of magnesium, particularly in the automotive sector where magnesium alloys are used to reduce vehicle weight and improve energy efficiency. Vehicle production trends and magnesium intensity per vehicle in China will therefore continue to be key drivers of global demand. However, as electrification accelerates and lightweighting remains a priority for both internal combustion and electric vehicles, magnesium’s role in next-generation vehicle platforms is expected to expand.

Beyond China, the aluminium alloy sector continues to represent the largest end-use market for primary magnesium. With global aluminium demand projected to grow steadily—supported by energy transition technologies, transport electrification and infrastructure investment—magnesium consumption in aluminium alloys is also expected to strengthen.

At the same time, geopolitical developments are increasingly shaping the magnesium landscape. Disruptions to energy markets, ongoing conflicts in parts of Europe and the Middle East, and broader trade tensions are adding uncertainty to industrial production and supply chains outside China. These factors reinforce the importance of diversified magnesium supply and improved market transparency.
